[2011] Shroud Eater - Thundernoise

First full-length of this Florida-based independent band, consisting of two female guitar and bass players (Jean Saiz and JeanetteValentine, respectively) and a male drummer (Felipe Torres), delivering an intense mix of fast, heavy riffing (which hardly resembles some of the most obvious examples within the genre) with a mid-paced, energetic drumming, punishing the eardrums with its fierce delivery. The vocals are midway between coarse and clean, with a few harsh moments that don't disappoint. Amazing material, and easily one of the most noteworthy independent acts I've seen around lately.

[2008] SubRosa - Strega

SubRosa is a a band formed primarily by women playing an interesting blend of stoner doom metal with violins and clean female vocals, reminding me at times of Black Math Horseman, but more fast-paced and fierce, while retaining most of the same peaceful vibe in the vocals. I'm not a fan of the production, but the music sounds alright, this was a good mix of both styles and it deserves attention.

[2009] Naam - Naam

Selft-titled debut of this doom metal/psych rock band from New York, following a similar trend bands like Serpent Throne and Glowsun have done recently, which is instrumental trippy jams drenched in stoner/psych riffs. Admittedly I'm not much of a fan of this genre (stoner rock can get boring after a while) but this band in particular managed to keep me interested during the whole album so I believe it deserves props for that. Give it a try, surely it won't disappoint. Same label as bands like Karma to Burn, Ancestors and Earthless.

[2001] Porn (The Men Of) - Experiments in Feedback

Dale Crover (Melvins, Shrinebuilder) and Tim Moss are the main members of a collab project that has been conformed by many other musicians such as Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Sleep), Masami Akita (in An The Devil Makes Three), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and plenty of others. As expected, the music is slow and heavy, reminiscent at times of Melvins at their heaviest. Experiments in Feedback is their second album, which along with Wine, Women and Song is the best material they've released.

[2010] Saturnalia Temple/Nightbringer/Nihil Nocturne/Aluk Todolo - On The Powers of The Sphinx

My third favorite split of this year (first would be Lose / Lose / Lose, and second Dirtpill / Заводь / Zuboroth), this 4-way split delivers the best of occult-influenced bands I've heard so far. Saturnalia Temple's song (To Know) manages to sound even dirtier and obscure than their previous albums (specially UR), but enough to be a perfect mood-setter for this interesting release. Admittedly I'm not a fan of what they do, but at least I can say it might be of interest to those into the occult vibe of some recent doom metal bands (Moss and Dark Buddha Rising come to mind, for instance). Next we have Nightbringer (To Will), band already well-known in the orthodox black metal scene, with a song that I wouldn't really consider their best of their career, but at least goes along nicely with the concept. It does drag a bit, but this is normal with Nightbringer.
Next song would be To Dare by Nihil Nocturne, a german black metal band with a long career, with this song being one of the main highlights of this split. The prize goes, however, to Aluk Todolo with To Keep Silent, one of their longest songs, in which the mood set by Saturnalia Temple earlier in the album is improved by the syncopathed drumming and the heavy feedback that characterizes this band. It sounds as if it was recorded live, seeing as the production is not as good compared to their previous albums, although it doesn't affect at all their quality. Top quality release, as it's usual with Ajna Offensive.
