[2006] Circle - Miljard

Very unlike most of their back catalog, Miljard is Circle's most obvious ambient album, which still has a few motorik tingles, but it's mostly slow and drawn out. If you enjoy that side of them or if you're a fan of low key, guitar-oriented post-rock, you might enjoy this album. Personally I think it's good (in a complete different direction), 2CD's full of  great ambient music which the short bursts of intensity the band is known for.

[2011] Circle - Infektio

The latest Circle album, which steps away from the intensity Rautatie had and went into full psychedelic rock with some drawn out, ambient parts. It feels shorter than its predecessor, but it compensates it with the strong tribal vibe and the kosmische synths. Definitely, great material.

Roadburn Festival 2011: Selected Bands

I've been doing it for a while, but didn't really keep up, so...
To commemorate Roadburn 2011, I'm going to post a good amount of bands and albums relevant to this festival. The guys from Sunn O))) put together an amazing lineup this year, and I thought Tom Warrior's was already perfect as it was. So since tomorrow (or practically today, considering the time difference) the festival will start, it's going to be a good opportunity for us who couldn't make it to check out some of the amazing bands in there.

Check the label Roadburn Festival under Collections.

[2011] Blood Ceremony - Living With The Ancients

3 years after their amazing self-titled album, Blood Ceremoony's sound has definitely matured and dwelved into heavier territories. Their Jethro Tull-influenced style brought by Alia O'Brien's amazing flute now is toned down a bit to allow the heavy doom metal riffing to fully shine, while her vocals display more personality and range than they used to, specially in Night of Augury, in which the occult, 70's psychedelic vibe is accentuated at great extents. The real highlight of the album is, however, Daughter of The Sun, in which guitars, synths and flute go into a psychedelic wormhole, the perfect closure for this release, that could be considered well ahead their self-titled.

[2007] Aluk Todolo - Descension

Their noisiest album (also their first), a pure display of krautrock repetitiveness that reminds of their Tony Conrad influence. While not as cyclical and compelling in delivery as Finsternis, this album deserves a listen mostly because of the first and last track, its harsh wall of sound with fast drumming will definitely attract the followers of the genre looking for some recent works.

[2011][UPCOMING] Sunn O))) - Agharhi 09-10

(Via Ideologic.org)

Just look at this beauty... Can't wait to hear it. While Monoliths & Dimensions wasn't a total favorite (an overdose of Attila Csihar, as much as I like the guy's vocals in Oracle), some of their songs were just amazing and I expect them to sound immense live, just like La Mort Noir Dans / Ech Alzette did. I guess the idea of having a live choir in some gigs couldn't materialize, but I suppose sometime in the future it'll happen.
Only two ways to get this: through the SL Subscription Series, or Roadburn 2011. It seems like there will be a lot of speculation with the prices of this release, given the exclusivity. Quite a shame, but I'll try to acquire it nonetheless.

I think there's a typo on the official flyer on Southern Lord's site, since it says Agharhi instead of Agharthi, like in the cover shown above. It might be the actual name though, but I'll remain skeptical until I see the cover in full view.

[REQUEST] [2000] Circle - Prospekt

One of the most acclaimed Circle albums, its hypnotic heavy motorik (already a trademark of their style) truly shines in a prominent way. 6 somewhat long songs that will carry the listener for a mind trip that will seem endless.

Currently sold out in Ektro Records.

[2011] Earth - Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1

Three years after The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull, Earth finally makes a worthy comeback with what it seems it'll be the first part of a series, called Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1. Still rooted in the somewhat clean, acoustic drone and the chilled out melodies that characterize them since HEX, this album however displays a big eastern folk influence (according to them, Tuareg music), borrowing some of the heavy dark atmosphere present in HEX; Or Printing In The Infernal Method to fully illustrate a deserted landscape, in which the country setting is left behind to focus into the mystical vibe of the Middle East.
There's violins in this album (courtesy of Lori Goldston), which surprisingly gives the songs a Bohren & der Club of Gore kinda sound (mostly noticeable in Father Midnight), a jazzy feeling that it's ensured to please their long-term fans, and placing the album at a remarkable distance from the aforementioned HEX, Bees, and even Hibernaculum.
The best song in the album is, definitely, the title track. Also the longest track in the album, its bass-driven melody is a definitive must-have, soothing and overwhelming in a way not too unlike their heaviest albums, except in a more subtle way. Even though it found its way to the internet 2 months earlier to its original release, this is an album to be purchased and listened in a physical format, so I encourage you from here to do so.

[2009] Naam - Naam

Selft-titled debut of this doom metal/psych rock band from New York, following a similar trend bands like Serpent Throne and Glowsun have done recently, which is instrumental trippy jams drenched in stoner/psych riffs. Admittedly I'm not much of a fan of this genre (stoner rock can get boring after a while) but this band in particular managed to keep me interested during the whole album so I believe it deserves props for that. Give it a try, surely it won't disappoint. Same label as bands like Karma to Burn, Ancestors and Earthless.

[2010] Mamiffer / House of Low Culture - Uncrossing / Ice Mole

Latest release of House of Low Culture (3/4 ISIS, 1/4 Stephen O'Malley), a primarily drone-doom/field recordings band, and Mamiffer (Aaron Turner, Faith Cocciola), a post-rock/ambient project. Admittedly not much of a fan of ISIS-related works (let alone Aaron Turner), but I considered this split to be quite interesting. My favorite side is House of Low Culture's, with a rumbling, subtle bass dragging all the way until the end while the seemlingly natural, earthly sounds swirl away; but Mamiffer's side, with the slow, chilling piano is also a highlight on this split.

Sunn O))) Presents: Aluk Todolo @ Roadburn Festival 2011

It's a shame I probably won't be able to attend, but this looks like a promising show:

If you attend Roadburn 2011, you're in for a treat. This band was a perfect addition to the lineup put together by Sunn O))) for next year's event. Hopefully, 2011 won't suffer the same natural events like the volcano eruption during the first three months of this year, which caused several bands to cancel and some others to spend extra cash on land transportation..

[2006] Circle - Tyrant

Starting with a psychedelic, repeated section typical of their take on krautrock, it devolves into weirdness, with the punkish vocals, frantic drumming and crazy synths which quickly picks up pace before fading and getting their engines ready for the next song(s). Almost 45min of the best introduction to Circle that I'd recommend for beginners and fans of the genre alike, brought as usual by Latitudes.

[2010] Master Musicians Of Bukkake - Elogia De La Sombra

It's no surprise that the Latitudes release of Master Musicians of Bukkake also happens to be the weirdest so far  (in the opposite sense) for the band. This album, pushing forward the already present (yet subtle) style in Totem Two, composed a traditional drone/psych folk album which lots of eastern influences (and reminiscent of 70's krautrock bands), and then a full blown krautrock song, which features lyrics for the first time. A big favorite of this year, Elogia de La Sombra is a great album featuring the best psych folk of this decade.

[2009] Aluk Todolo - Finsternis

Formed by members of Diamatregon, Aluk Todolo is a strange beast. Mixing some of the occult, dark aesthetics of black metal with the krautrock present in Faust and This Heat to create a chaotic dense atmosphere  in which the only grounding element is the syncopated drumming and whirling feedback coming and going. Aside from that, it's hard to describe; this is one of these bands capable of creating a timeless sonic experience, making it easy to completely forget about how long (or short) it actually is. In some circles it's considered as "black metal" but in reality I see this more as an alternative for fans of bands like This Heat or Camberwell Now, constantly craving for similar sounding music, inspiring the best post-punk/krautrock ever created.
Play it loud!
